Dave Morgan injured: may miss ANU game
By ROD KIRKPATR1CK
Eastlake full-forward
David Morgan is not
expected to be fit to
play next Saturday
against his former club,
ANU, in the Canberra
Australian National
Football League.
Morgan dislocated the
little finger on his right
hand when trying lo punch
the ball away in Satur
day's match against Quean
beyan at Phillip Oval.
Eastlake president, Mr
Jim Dutey, said last night
that Morgan had had
some stitches inserted in
the finger, which had been
split and doubled up when
he had left the field, dur
ing the second quarter.
Morgan, who had kicked
three goals, did not return
to the field.
Eastlake won the match
24.22 (166) to 8.9 (57)
after leading 8.8 to 6.5 at
half time. It kicked 12.7
to 1.0 in the third quarter.
At Ainslie Oval, Ainslie
continued to have bad
luck in the ruck. Ruck
man Tonv White received
a suspected broken collar
bone in Saturday's match
against Belconnen.
In the match, which
Ainslie won 17.11 (113) to
8.6 (54), another Ainslie
ruckman, Peter Johnson,
left the field with an ankle
injury. Tn a trial match
before the season had be
gun, ruckman Kevin Mat
thews, an outstanding
Ainslie recruit, broke his
arm badly and is not ex
pected to play until late
in the season.
Bclconnen led Ainslie
7.4 to 5.5 at half time, but
its effort in the second half
raises some question marks
about the team's fitness.
At ANU South Oval,
Acton centre half-back.
Greg Luhrs grimaced as
he studied the scoreboard
at the end of the third
quarter in the match
against ANU.
"They're not 14 goals
better than us", the dark
haired, solidly built Luhrs
muttered.
He was right. ANU went
on to win by 19 goals.
It was so easy for ANU,
which had lost its first
three matches this season,
that Acton captain-coach
Colin Trevaskis had good
reason when he told his
players at three - quarter
time that he was "dis
gusted". He told them it
was tiot much use his
"busting his guts out"
week after week if he did
not have their support.
Strong words from a
coach, but nothing short of
what was warranted afier
Acton's performances this
season. Its average losing
margin after four matches
is 114.5 points; it lost by
74 to Manuka, 83 to Ains
lic, 173 to Eastlake and
128 to ANU.
Acton has several key
players on the injury list,
John Hoare is back in
Melbourne, and Neil Lew
thwaite, the Mulrooney
Medallist in 1967, has re
tired after playing 200
games for the club.
In Saturday's match,
Acton began determinedly,
going hard for the ball,
backing up and passing
with purpose.
Outstanding
player
It kicked the first two
goals, before the ANU
centre half-forward Chris
Bowman put in some good
lead-up work for full
forward Kod Brown to
kick a goal.
Bowman, tall, well built
and from Flinders Univer
sity, was the outstanding
player of the match with
his sound marking, intelli
gent passing and handball,
and his goal kicking.
He kicked one goal from
about 50 yards out, and
another from 40 yards
after holding a powerful
pass from wingman Tony
Pryor, who had kicked it
from about 12 yards away.
After its early zip,
Acton had slowed a little
by the end of the first
quarter to trail 3.3 to 6.2.
The ANU kicking was off
beam in the second quarter
when the wind behind it
freshened. It kicked seven
behinds.
At half time, Acton
trailed 5.3 to 10.9. In the
third quarter, it played
miserably. Any cohesion
that it had shown was
gone as players stabbed
passes straight to the op
position, did not back up,
did not shepherd.
The scores tell the story
in a nutshell: ANU kicked
9.6 in this quarter; Acton
did not score.
In the final quarter,
ANU kicked another six
goals, and Acton finished
off the match the way it
had begun, with two suc
cessive goals.
Centre Ray Trebilcock,
full-back Andy Barker,
ruckman Trevaskis and
Luhrs were among the
small batch of Acton
players who showed
any talent and determina
tion. Ruckman Bill Adams

ing to an Acton spokes
man.
Ron Arendarcikas. the
17-year-old from Albury,
played his first match for
Acton, on a half-back
flank. He showed purpose
in his play.
For ANU, half-forward
flanker Sieve Bally, half
back flanker Gavan Nolan,
ruckman GeolT Craighead,
and rover Bob Wilson
were impressive. Bally
kicked five goals and con
tributed to the cohesive
ANU effort.
The ANU defence shut
out Acton repeatedly, in
tercepting passes and
initiating new attacks.
