Viewers Using Antennas Will Need to Rescan TVs

Milwaukee, WI -- WMLW – The M, WCGV - My 24, and Milwaukee PBS (WMVS and WMVT), announced today that they will be moving frequencies on January 8, 2018. Milwaukee area viewers who watch TV for free with an over the air antenna must rescan their TVs to continue watching the stations. Viewers do not need to purchase new equipment or services.

Viewers who watch these stations through a cable or satellite service do not need to take action, as their service provider will handle any changes internally.

After the rescan on Monday morning, January 8, viewers will continue to receive WMLW-The M on channel 49.1, WCGV- My24 on channel 24.1, Milwaukee PBS -WMVS on channel 10.1, and Milwaukee PBS - WMVT on 36.1.

To rescan on January 8, over the air viewers should select “scan” or “autotune” on the TV or converter box control menu to start the scanning process. Instructions are usually available by pressing the “setup” or “menu” buttons on the remote control. This move is internal to the television set, so viewers do not need to know the new channel frequency.

The Milwaukee stations were all participants in a recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) auction of broadcast airwaves to provide more channels for wireless internet broadband services. WMLW, WCGV, WMVS and WMVT, along with nearly 1,000 stations nationwide, participated in the auction and will change frequencies.

How do I perform a rescan?

Using your TV or convertor box remote control press the SETTINGS or MENU button. You should then see a menu appear on the screen. Typical remotes will have up/down, left/right navagation buttons with an enter/ok button in the center. Use this to navagate through the menu. Look for a sub-menu called CHANNEL. You should see that AIR or ANTENNA is already selected. Next, select either AUTO PROGRAM, AUTO SCAN, AUTO TUNE, or FIND CHANNELS. Wait for the scan to complete. Once the scan is complete, you will continue to find My24 on 24.1 and COMET on 24.2.

Why is My24 moving frequencies?

Wireless internet shares the same spectrum as over-the-air broadcast television. In 2012, Congress authorized the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to hold an auction and reallocate broadcast TV airwaves for use by wireless services. WCGV participated in the auction and must relinquish its frequency by January 23rd, 2018. The programming of My24 and Comet will continue broadcasting using sister station CW18's frequency (referred to as "channel sharing"), and will also continue to appear as 24.1 (My24) and 24.2 (Comet) on your home televisions.

How does it impact me and what do I need to do?

If you rely on an antenna to receive free, over-the-air TV, you will need to rescan your TV on or after January 8, 2018 to continue to see My24 and COMET. If you subscribe to a pay-TV service – such as cable or satellite – you do not need to do anything.

How will I know when to rescan?

CW18 & My24 will be airing daily PSAs and crawls to remind over-the-air viewers about the date of the channel change and the need to rescan.

Will my TV stations get new numbers?

After you rescan your TV set, your local TV stations will still be found at their usual channel numbers.
