Michael Basil Cosmopoulos is an anthropologically trained classical archaeologist  specializing in Homeric studies, social memory, state formation,  and mystery cults, on which he has published 19 books and over 130 scholarly papers. Currently, he is Professor of Greek History and Archaeology and holder of theHellenic Government-Karakas Foundation Endowed Chair in Greek Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  He is a member of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences; a Fellow of theRoyal Society of Canada; a member of theEuropean Academy of Sciences and Arts; a Fellow of the Academy of Science (St. Louis); a Corresponding Member of theGreek Academy of Arts and Sciences; an honorary member of theArchaeological Society at Athens; and a National Geographic Society Explorer. In 2022,  he was decorated by the President of Greece with the Gold Cross of the Order of Phoenix and in 2023 he was elected a Regular Member of theGreek  Academy of Arts and Sciences.    He directs the interdisciplinary excavation of the Mycenaean capital at Iklaina, in Pylos.
