| dcterms:abstract | - 1963년 주한미국대사관 직원들이 각지를 순행하며 정치 동향, 사회경제적 사정, 여론 등 지방 상황 전반을 현지조사한 문서이다. 10월 대통령 선거를 앞둔 시점에서 각 지역사정과 민심의 동향을 객관적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 중요한 자료이다. 그렇다고 해서 조사가 정치에만 초점을 맞추고 진행되지는 않았고 교육과 산업이나 대미인식 같은 것도 대상에 포함되었다. 조사지역은 전라남도 광주, 경상북도의 도시와 농촌, 충청북도, 부산, 충청남북도, 경기도, 청주와 대전과 대구, 부산과 마산, 경상남북도였다. 강원도와 전라북도가 제외된 이유는 알 수 없다. 충청남북도와 경상남북도에 조사가 집중된 것은 대통령 후보인 윤보선과 박정희의 출신지역이기 때문인 듯하다. 특히 대구와 부산에서는 전통적 “반대” 특성을 뒤엎을 만큼 박정희의 인기가 높았다. 이들 문서는 지역민의 정치적 성향과 함께 군사정부에 대한 여론, 또한 흉년 등으로 인한 식량 부족 등을 적고 있어 정치적‧경제적으로 의미가 있다. 특히 문서는 경제적 어려움을 중점적으로 기록하고 있는데 농민들은 흉년으로 정부대출 이자를 갚기에 힘들어하고 있었음에도 농촌 지역에서 야당을 지지하는 움직임은 없다고 보고하고 있다. 청주와 충주 주민들은 박정희 의장이 대통령이 될 것으로 예상하고 있었다 (xsd:string)
