Taylor &Francis Buys Marcel Dekker

NEWS--Taylor & Francis acquires Marcel Dekker[SNIP]TAYLOR & FRANCIS ACQUIRES MARCEL DEKKERIn a surprise announcement, U.K. publisher Taylor & Francis announced thatit has struck a deal to acquire science publisher Marcel Dekker, Inc. Thedeal for Dekker's scientific, technical and medical publishing assets isfor $138.6 million. Dekker's sales for 2002 were reportedly $42 million.New York-based Dekker, founded in 1963, publishes 78 journals and roughly200 new books annually, with a backlist of over 3000 titles. Theacquisition is yet another for the rapidly expanding T&F group, which hasspent nearly $275 million in acquiring Swets & Zeitlinger Publishers, CRCPress, and Frank Cass. In a statement, CEO David Smith said that T&F wasan "acquisitive company," part of a strategy to grow the business. Smithalso said that the deal would strengthen T&F's footprint in theincreasingly consolidated STM market--even while acknowledging that theSTM market is under strain. "While the U.S. market is challenging," saidSmith, "this is a good opportunity to extend our presence in the largestsegment of the global STM market."
