Athree-headed dog,[4] also known as aCerberus,[3] was a very raremagicalbeast.[2][4] It is unknown if, like theRunespoor, each head served a different purpose. Their great weakness was the inability to resist falling asleep to the sound of music.[4]
History[]
During the1800s a tapestry of a three-headed dog was hung on the walls ofHogwarts Castle,[5] and in1932 theDaily Prophet reported that athree-headed dog was lost in theLondon fog.[6]

Rubeus Hagrid once owned a three-headed dog namedFluffy, which he obtained from aGreek man he met ata pub. Fluffy served as one of theobstacles to thePhilosopher's Stone in1992.[2][4] InOctober1991,Harry Potter,Hermione Granger,Ron Weasley andNeville Longbottom inadvertently stumbled upon Fluffy after night hours at Hogwarts, when they were trying to hide fromArgus Filch.[1] Later inJune1992, Harry managed to put Fluffy to sleep by playing theflute, so he, Ron and Hermione could enter theUnderground Chambers.[4]
During theCalamity in the2010s and2020s, three-headed dog Foundables starting appeared throughout the wizarding world. Volunteers of theStatute of Secrecy Task Force were sent to deal with these Foundables to be freed and return to their rightful places of belonging.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- Although identified asbeasts, it is unknown what danger classification theDepartment for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures gives three-headed dogs, but seen as though they are large, aggressive and require highly specialist handling, it is likely they are rankedXXXX.
- In Greek mythology,Cerberus was a three-headed dog that guarded the gates tothe underworld. In order to get past him, music would have to be played for him to fall asleep, as portrayed in thefilm adaptation ofHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
- In thefilm adaptation ofHarry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Hagrid gets Fluffy from "an Irish feller". In the novel, Hagrid gets him from "a Greek chappie".
- AtThe Wizarding World of Harry Potter, one can purchase a plush version of Fluffy.
