History[]
The Sundial predated the construction ofHogwarts Castle, as thefour founders built their school upon an ancientCeltic site. Following the school's founding, however, it was incorporated as part of the school grounds.[3] Within the1993–1994 school year, the Stone Circle allowed the activity ofOwl Racing between Hogwarts students.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
- The Sundial Garden is known simply as the Stone Circle in thePrisoner of Azkaban,Order of the Phoenix andHalf-Blood Prince video games.
- Inspiration for Stone Circle came from Stonehenge in the English CountyWiltshire, as well as other stone circles, such as Avebury.[2]
- In recalling the first time the young actors in thefilms saw the stones, art directorAlan Gilmore commented "I heard they askedAlfonso if the stones were why he chose the location. It's always gratifying when your work is mistaken for the real thing!"[2]
- The stones are not present inHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 when theSnatchers run through theWooden Bridge.
