Biography[]

He was formerly a servant ofApollonia Black, a member of theHouse of Black. She regularly abused the house-elf, once damaging his ear with a cleaver. She also forbade him from enteringher private grotto. By the end of Apollonia's life, she wasdelirious, eventually mistakingbelladonna forelderberries andpoisoning herself. Before herdeath, Scrope had attempted to warn her, but she had not listened. He passed toPhineas Nigellus Black.^[3]

In the1890–1891 school year, he was in theGreat Hall when he was also approached by anew fifth-year student, who was disguised as Black usingPolyjuice Potion. Not knowing their real identity, he told them thepassword to theHeadmaster's office: "toujours pur", theHouse of Black family motto.^[1]

He was cleaning his master's bust in the castle whenNicholas de Mimsy-Porpington begged him to clean the ghost's bust, as it had been gathering dust for years and previous attempts at cleaning it were not thorough enough. Scrope didn't want to do it, but was manipulated into agreeing to do the cleaning.^[2]

Physical description[]

Scrope was a house-elf with thin grey hair, blue eyes and pale skin, wearing the rags that his kind wore. At some point, he lost an ear, and afterwards wore a bandage on his head covering the resulting wound.^[1] He could speakFrench, although he was said to be "pitiful" at it.^[1]

Etymology[]

Scrope was named afterHenry Scrope, 3rd Baron Scrope of Masham, a nobleman who was beheaded for treason.^[4] The name is of uncertain etymological origin.
