"Sage has both mundane and magical uses, and is even used indivination."
Pomona Sprout regarding the uses of sage[src]

Sage is a herb that had bothmagical and mundane uses, such asdivination.[1] It was used bycentaurs, along withMallowsweet, to assist in their stargazing. They burned the herb and observe theflames and fumes produced.[3]

Sage was used in its powdered form in theMemory Potion.[2]

History[]

During the1989–1990 school year at Hogwarts,Jacob's sibling approachedProfessor Sprout in theHerbology Classroom asking for herbs that could be given to thecentaurs in theForbidden Forest in order to gain entry to theCentaur Camp, she presented them with sage, lavender anddittany, explaining the uses of each plant to them and allowed them to take which one they pleased.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Salvia and "sage" are derived from the Latin salvere (to save), referring to the healing properties long attributed to the various Salvia species. Modern evidence shows possible uses as an antisweating agent, antibiotic, antifungal, astringent, antispasmodic, estrogenic, hypoglycemic, and tonic.[4]
  • Sage is also a known herb used in witchcraft and Paganism to banish negative spirits.
