ThePimple Jinx,[2] also known as theFurnunculus Curse[4] (Furnunculus),[1] was aDark charm that caused a person to break out in boils/pimples when it came in contact with their skin.[1] It could induceacne.[5] The effects could be cleared by theBoil-Cure Potion.[6]

History[]

InSimon Talmadge'sthird year atHogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the bullyMabel threatened to use this spell on him, but he was saved byGwydion Idris.[7]

During the1986–1987 school year,Penny Haywood accidentally mistook the incantation forFerula, theBandaging Charm, with that of this jinx and accidentally cast it on herself.[8]

During the1990–1991 school year at Hogwarts,ProfessorOlivia Green taught this spell to herseventh-yearDefence Against the Dark Arts students.[5] It was for a time a favourite ofHarry Potter, who used it twice in hisfourth year.[1][3] It had unpleasant side-effects if it happened to strike a person in conjunction with theJelly-Legs Curse, causing the victim to sprout small tentacles all over their face.[3]

Etymology[]

Furuncle is another term for a boil, derived from the Latin wordfurunculus, which means "petty thief".

  • Whilst the book states it produces boils,Pottermore says it makes pimples. It is currently unknown which is correct.
