Mortality is the state of being mortal, or susceptible todeath; it is the opposite ofimmortality.[1] Almost all knownbeasts andbeings, bothmagical and non-magical alike, were subject to mortality.Spirits, however, were not, as they had either already died or were never truly alive.

Nature[]

Phoenixes were the only living creatures known to be naturallyimmortal, as they were immediately reborn from their ashes after dying.[2][3][4] Other methods might be used to grant immortality, such asHorcruxes[5] and theElixir of Life,[6] although such sources might be withheld or destroyed, rendering their user mortal once again.

Some beings, such asBoggarts andPoltergeists, were consideredamortal, meaning they couldn't die as they had never truly been alive to begin with.[7]

Although it was commonly believed that mastering all three of theDeathly Hallows would make their owner immortal,Albus Dumbledore stated that the trueMaster of Death accepted their own mortality.[8]
