Ragnuk curse HM

Ragnuk's ghost cursing Merula Synde

Griphook: "The right to carry a wand has long been contested between wizards and goblins."
Ron Weasley: "Well, goblins can do magic without wands."
Griphook: "That is immaterial! Wizards refuse to share the secrets of wandlore with other magical beings, they deny us the possibility of extending our powers!"
— An exchange betweenGriphook andRonald Weasley[src]

Goblin magic was a brand ofwandlessmagic known to be employed byGoblins[1]

Nature[]

This magic had the potential of being channelled through a wand, asAmerican goblin gangsterGnarlak in1927 andHodrod the Horny-Handed infamously demonstrated during theChipping Clodbury riot in1999,[2] but goblin possession of wands had been outlawed by theMinistry of Magic since the inception of theWand Ban (Clause Three of theCode of Wand Use), passed in1631.

Goblins resented this fact bitterly as, inGriphook's words, this was thewizards' way of denying them the chance of extending their powers through the study ofwandlore.[1] This was, in fact, one of the facts that provoked one of the bloody, violent,Goblin Rebellions in the17th and18th centuries.[3]

History[]

TheGoblin Banker who guardedVault 12 during the1890s was able to use Goblin magic, wandlessly and non-verbally shutting the door to Vault 12 and lockingEleazar Fig and aHogwarts student inside, as per his instructions.[4]

Theghost of the Goblin KingRagnuk was capable ofcursing anyone who entered his crypt inSt Jerome's graveyard inGodric's Hollow looking for theSword of Gryffindor, completely blinding them. Only he could lift thecurse.Merula Snyde was subjected to this curse inHallowe'en of1986, depriving her of her sight when she tried to retrieve the sword from his crypt, and Ragnuk only agreed to lift the curse on her and all others after being persuaded byJacob's sibling.[5]

  3. This piece of information comes from the thirdW.O.M.B.A.T. featured inJ. K. Rowling's official site. Question 2 (Part One - Magical History) is "Which of the following did NOT provoke one of the bloody goblin rebellions of the 17th and 18th centuries? Choose ONE.", and one of the possible answers is "The Ministry of Magic Decree of 1631, preventing all magical beings other than wizards carrying a wand". As one of the other answers is known for certain to be false ("The imprisonment of the notoriously violent Hodrod the Horny-Handed, who had attempted to kill three wizards" — theDaily Prophet Newsletters reveal thatHodrod the Horny-Handed was indeed imprisoned for attempting to kill three wizards, but this happened in1999, during theChipping Clodbury riot), then all of the other answers must be true, including the one about the 1631 decree.
