Selecting champions for theTriwizard Tournament[1]

"The champions will be chosen by an impartial selector: the Goblet of Fire. Anybody wishing to submit themselves as champion must write their name and school clearly upon a slip of parchment and drop it into the goblet, aspiring champions have twenty-four hours in which to put their names forward. Tomorrow night, Hallowe'en, the goblet will return the names of the three it has judged most worthy to represent their schools. The goblet will be placed in the entrance hall tonight, where it will be freely accessible to all those wishing to compete."
Albus Dumbledore introducing the Goblet of Fire in1994[src]

TheGoblet of Fire was the "impartial judge" for theTriwizard Tournament which chose which students would represent their respectiveschools during the upcoming tasks of the Tournament.[1]

To put forward their candidacy, students merely had to write their name on a piece ofparchment and put it into the goblet'sflame. When the time came for the champions to be selected, the goblet would then choose one student from each school by spitting out their name in a rush of red flames. Once chosen, the participants were subject to abinding magical contract in which they could not back out of the Tournament.[1]

Description[]

The goblet was described as being made of wood and — when active — had blue-whiteflames up to the edges, which turned red when someone put their name in or when it spit out the name of a chosen champion. When it was not in use, it was kept in ajewelled casket.[1]

It acted as an impartial judge. During the1994 Tournament, an age restriction was added and, as such, anAge Line was cast to ensure that no one under the minimum age could try to put their name into the goblet. Anyone who tried to do so with anAgeing Potion would end up being hit with its flames and forced to age even further to appear like old men, as demonstrated by what happened toFred andGeorge Weasley when they tried to trick the goblet via that exact method.[1]

Though it was intended to be impartial, it could bebewitched to make decisions that transgressed the rules. Since the goblet was a highly powerful magical artefact, it would require aConfundus Charm of equal or greater power to accomplish this. After the champions were selected, it would extinguish itself and would not reignite until the next tournament.[2]

History[]

Creation[]

Apparently crafted sometime during theMiddle Ages, by1994, the Goblet of Fire had served as a means of selecting champions for theTriwizard Tournament ever since the contest's establishment.[3] It was contained in an ancientwooden chest encrusted with jewels when not in use.[1]

The 1994 Triwizard Tournament[]

"Finally, I wish to impress upon any of you wishing to compete that this tournament is not to be entered into lightly. Once a champion has been selected by the Goblet of Fire, he or she is obliged to see the tournament through to the end. The placing of your name in the goblet constitutes a binding, magical contract. There can be no change of heart once you have become a champion. Please be very sure, therefore, that you are wholeheartedly prepared to play before you drop your name into the goblet. Now, I think it is time for bed. Good night to you all."

Due to revised safety precautions, onlywizards and witches who had come of age were allowed to enter the tournament. As such,Albus Dumbledore drew anAge Line around the Goblet during the1994 Tournament to prevent students under the age of seventeen from entering their name.[1]

However,Bartemius Crouch Junior, disguised asAlastor Moody, rigged the goblet and the tournament as part ofa plan to use Harry'sblood torevive the Dark Lord.[4] He jinxed the goblet with an extremely powerfulConfundus Charm to make it forget that only three schools compete in the tournament and entered the name of fourteen-year-oldHarry Potter under a fourth school. As he was the sole candidate from said fourth school, this resulted in Harry being selected as a fourth Champion in the Tournament, alongsideFleur Delacour ofBeauxbatons,Viktor Krum ofDurmstrang, andCedric Diggory ofHogwarts. After the champions had been selected, the flames of the goblet went out and would not ignite again until the next Tournament, much toIgor Karkaroff's frustration, as he wanted to carry on selecting champions until each school had two representatives to even things out.[2][4]

Eventually, the Hogwarts professors discovered the plan and captured Crouch Jnr, just as they discovered the abducted real Moody in captivity. What became of the goblet after the 1994–1995 Triwizard Tournament is unknown, though it was eventually rendered effectively useless with the permanent discontinuation of the Tournament following this event.

The Calamity[]

During theCalamity which affected theWizarding world in the late2010s and early2020s, the Goblet of Fire was amongst the variousmagical items which appeared across the world as one of manyFoundables guarded byConfoundables. These had to be overpowered by volunteerwizards and witches who worked for theStatute of Secrecy Task Force, returning these Foundables to their original place.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

The Goblet of Fire concept art

  • In thefilm adaptation ofHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (and all subsequent video game adaptations), the goblet is depicted as being much larger than in thebook andPottermore. Rather than being a small wooden goblet placed atop itscasket, it is a large stone goblet attached to a tall stand, withHogwarts Castle engraved into the base of the stand.
  • The goblet may possess an unknown degree of sentience, similar to such objects as theSorting Hat. Beyond its mere ability to sort through applicants, this is further suggested by the fact that theConfundus Charm, whose purpose is to confuse a mind, could be used against it, albeit only by awitch or wizard of great skill.
