TheMarauders' puzzle involved gathering ingredients to make this potion which, when poured onto the parchment that the puzzle was written on and tossed into the Gryffindor common room fire, would congratulate the student on solving the puzzle.[7]

In the1985–1986 school year atHogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Fire Protection Potion was taught tosecond-years byProfessorSeverus Snape inPotions class.[2]

During the same year,Jacob's sibling andBen Copper created this potion and poured it onto the parchment which contained the Marauders' puzzle, then tossed the parchment into the fire, solving the puzzle.[7]

Severus Snape brewed this potion inSeptember of1991, as part of hisprotection of thePhilosopher's Stone.[1]Quirinus Quirrell andHarry Potter later each took this potion in order to get past the flames and into the deepest room ofUnderground Chambers, containing theMirror of Erised and Philosopher's Stone. It is presumed Albus Dumbledore also used this potion to bypass the black flames and enter the room containing the Mirror to save Harry from Quirrell.

  1. Slicebursting mushrooms with knife, add tocauldron and stir clockwise until potion turns blue.[7]
  2. AddSalamander blood to cauldron, stir anti-clockwise until potion turns green.[7]
  3. Crushwartcap powder in pestle, add to cauldron and stir clockwise until potion turns red.[3][7]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Given that every potion requires a magical component to complete the brewing process, the most likely spell needed to complete this potion is theFlame-Freezing Charm.
