"A common garden plant that is known to bite or attack if not taken care of. Its fangs are used in many simple potions and in cooking."
— Description on seed packet at Dogweed and Deathcap[src]

AFanged Geranium was amagical flower with sharp teeth.[1][5] Its fangs were used aspotion ingredients, as well as inwizarding foodstuffs.[4]

They were also an ingredient in theStrength Potion,[6][7] as well as inSkele-Gro.[6] Fanged Geranium seeds were sold atDogweed and Deathcap andBewildering Blooms.[4][8]

Growth cycle[]

Green leaves started to fill out when the plant was in its seedling stage. They had to be provided with ample fertiliser so that its flowers could eventually grow fangs, otherwise they would only have gums. When it neared maturity, the flowers began to blossom and its fangs grew in. At this stage, it would get bitey when teething.[9]

Once it had fully matured, the age of the plant could be determined by counting the rings on the fangs. It is not known exactly how long Fanged Geraniums lived for. However,Gerald, a Fanged Geranium belonging toPomona Sprout, was noted to be very old at several decades.[10]

History[]

"They had their Herbology exam on Wednesday (other than a small bite from a Fanged Geranium, Harry felt he had done reasonably well)..."

There was widespread historical speculation that theMuggleWar of the Roses actually started withwizarding neighbours arguing over a Fanged Geranium.[11]

Fanged Geraniums were mentioned in an advertisement for theToots, Shoots 'n' Roots radio show that was printed inRumours!. The ad copy asked, "Fanged Geranium nothing but gums?"[5]

In the early2010s, a spate of injuries during aQuidditch exhibition atRiver Piddle causedSt Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries to run out ofSkele-Gro. One of the ingredients in the healing potion was the Fanged Geranium, but they started to run low on their supply of their fangs. In order to brew more, thehealers were willing to pay good money for fully grown fangs to save the trouble of charming and collecting them.[12]

In the early 2010s,ProfessorTofty had a complaint from a student who said their poor grade in theirHerbologyO.W.L. was because the Fanged Geranium they got was of poor quality, so he made a request for high quality Fanged Geraniums fromBewildering Blooms for the next year's O.W.L.s.[13]
