Dragon eggs tended to be very large (around 12 to 18 inches)[4] and needed a lot ofheat from their mothers to hatch.[1] Dragon mothers were very protective of their eggs, as was found out in theTriwizard Tournament whenHarry Potter'sHungarian Horntail violently tried to stop Harry from capturing thegolden egg, thinking it was one of her real eggs.[2] Dragon eggs were considered a Class ANon-Tradeable Material.[3]

InHarry Potter'sfirst year atHogwarts,Hagrid won a dragon's egg off a stranger he met down at theHog's Head pub inHogsmeade. The stranger was wearing a cloak so that no one could see his identity, but it is later learned it wasProfessor Quirrell. Hagrid kept the egg in order to try to hatch it by keeping it in the fireplace. Eventually it did hatch, but in the endNorbert was sent toRomania with a bunch ofCharlie Weasley's friends.[1]

In1994, as part of the First Task of theTriwizard Tournament at Hogwarts, the Triwizard Champions each had to retrieve agolden replica of a dragon's egg from a female dragon, with the dragon seeking to protect the replica egg among her own actual eggs.Viktor Krum was penalised for having used theConjunctivitis Curse on his dragon (aChinese Fireball), which caused the dragon to smash her own eggs due her eyesight being damaged with thecurse.[2]

During the1995–1996 school year at Hogwarts, theportrait ofGiffard Abbott required students use thepassword "dragon's egg" in order to use his secret passageway in thecastle.[7]

Following theburial of Aragog, Hagrid andHorace Slughorn sat together inHagrid's cabin and got drunk onBerry Ocky Rot. The eggs were fromChinese Fireball,Peruvian Vipertooth, andRomanian Longhorn dragons, and were taken to theRoom of Requirement to be cared for and kept warm while Shouren searched for a safe place to take them. TheChinese Fireball egg eventually hatched, and thehatchling remained in the care ofColby Frey and hiscolleague for a longer period of time until a safe location was found.[9]

During theCalamity which affected thewizarding world in the2010s, dragon eggs were some of the numerousmagical items and artefacts which were mysteriously scattered across the world asFoundables, guarding byConfoundables, which had to overpowered by volunteerwizards and witches of theStatute of Secrecy Task Force to return the Foundables to their rightful place.[10]
