Basic Cast

History[]

The spell was taught atHogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the19th century. During the summer prior to the1890–1891 school year,ProfessorEleazar Fig taught the spell toan unidentified student before they began theirfifth year. On1 September, the student used it to break a wall ofice protecting the path to someancient ruins.^[1]

Thenext day inDefence Against the Dark Arts, ProfessorDinah Hecat let the new fifth-year student try out the Basic Cast on atraining dummy protected by a magical shield, which deflected the cast. She instructed them to useLevioso to break the shield before using the Basic Cast again, which then hit the dummy successfully. She then arranged for the student toduel withSebastian Sallow, and reminded them that onlyLevioso,Protego and the Basic Cast were allowed to constitute a fair duel.^[2]
