Ancient Magic

Ancient magic

Ancient magic was a very old, mysterious and powerful form ofmagic, the ways of which had been all but forgotten in thewizarding world by the late19th century. Those who could perceive and had an affinity for wielding it were seen as having a unique and exceedingly rare ability. It was not greatly understood, even byProfessors ofHogwarts.[1]

Nature[]

A far older, deeper, and more fundamental form ofmagic than conventionalspell-casting; ancient magic was tied to the world itself and existed externally to the innate magic of wizards, and was therefore also accessible to othermagical creatures, such asdragons andgoblins.[2][3] It could manifest involuntary and independently of a wizard's intent or efforts through certain incalculably powerful acts, such as willinglygiving one's life tosave a loved one[4] but it could also be mastered and deliberately wielded, though this required great skill and knowledge to accomplish.[3] Rather than generating and channeling one's own innate magic tocast a spell, however, ancient magic wasinvoked,[5] and rather than bewitched things using ancient magic, things touched by it were instead described as being imbued with it.[2][6][7]

Ancient magic had the potential to move individuals across space,[8] as well asrestrict certain spaces, and also create seeminglyinterdependent dimensions: i.e., 'portals' that could effectively transport people to different versions of the same space.[3] Some ancient magic spells, such as thepain extraction spell, left "traces" behind, which agonised theKeepers as they did not know what damage these traces could do to their environment, so they needed to becontained.[9] A wizard could also harness ancient magic to augment their own magical abilities. The force could be used productively, as it was by the Keepers, but it was also capable of being abused, as evidenced by the case ofIsidora Morganach.[3] A skilled wizard could also deliberately invoke ancient magic to produce effects thatworked in tandem withindependent manifestations.[10]

Besides those who learned to wield ancient magic through time and study, there were also a select few witches and wizards who were born with a unique ability to use ancient magic, capable of seeing traces or "whispers" of ancient magic. To them, it resembled swirling clouds of smoke which were blue in colour.[3] Of the three known inherent wielders of ancient magic, they all began schooling atHogwarts in theirfifth year, linking the ability withlate blooming.[3]

History[]

Hogwarts in winter HL

Hogwarts Castle, a stronghold of ancient magic

Hogwarts Castle was said to have been built by and was itself a stronghold of ancient magic, defended by countless ancientprotective enchantments.[11][12] During the1988–1989 school year, Merlin's portrait described the fabledCursed Vaults as wreaking a punishment upon the denizens of Hogwarts for having "abandoned the ways of ancient magic", implying ancient magic and its practice was more common in medieval time and antiquity than modern times.[13]

During theTudor period, four Hogwarts professors, including theHeadmistress of the day, formed a group known as theKeepers, practitioners of ancient magic with a self-appointed mission to protect it and prevent its secrets from falling into the wrong hands. The leader of the group wasProfessor ofDivinationPercival Rackham, who was born with a special ability to perceive traces of ancient magic. The Keepers later met a gifted student,Isidora Morganach, who was born with the same ancient magic ability as Professor Rackham. They mentored her, and she later returned to Hogwarts asDefence Against the Dark Arts Professor and joined them. However, she began to misuse the power of ancient magic toextract emotional pain. The act of manipulating human emotions was a most depraved action in the first place, and the spell itself had a horrific side effect. When she refused to stop, the Keepers confronted her, leading to a conflict. The Keepers killed Isidora during the battle, sealed her repositories, and created trials to test future inheritors of their secret.[3]

In1783,Flannery, who was on a murderous rampage, supposedly used an "ancient spell" to track down the location of his murder victim,Hamish Steed, despite Steed being underMinistry protection.[14]

By the late19th century,Ranrok, a goblin rebel, sought ancient magic repositories for power, killingMiriam Fig to further his goal. Her husband,Eleazar Fig, and hismagically gifted student uncovered her research and worked to stop Ranrok, complete the Keepers' trials, and protect the final repository from Ranrok, who was eventually defeated during thebattle for the final repository.[3][15][1]

Lily Potter murdered

The death of Lily Potter, invoking sacrifical protection

In1981,Lily Potter sacrificed her life to save her son,Harry, from being murdered byLord Voldemort. The subsequentsacrificial protection unwittingly put on Harry, shielding him from harm, was a form of ancient magic.[4] BothAlbus Dumbledore and Voldemort were aware of this ancient magic, and Voldemort was known to "despise" it.[4] Indeed, Dumbledore was able to willingly invoke a form of ancient magic, abond of blood charm, to protectHarry Potter so long as he was in theDursley family's care.[10]

Xenophilius Lovegood believed thatlove was a great blessing bestowed upon the world by the practitioners of ancient magic.[16]

In1994,Harry Potter discovered from a book in theHogwarts Library that theimpervioushides ofdragons were imbued with ancient magic as he prepared for the first task of the1994–1995 Triwizard Tournament.[2]

On2 May1998, Harry Potter sacrificed his life by accepting Voldemort'sKilling Curse in order to confer sacrifical protection on the countlessHogwartians in theBattle of Hogwarts,[17] just as Harry's mother had done for him.

Practitioners of ancient magic[]

Some had the rare ability to perceive traces of ancient magic upon objects or surfaces, and to interact with those traces appropriately.[3] For others, it was possible for ancient spells and charms to be learned, (provided the witch or wizard was talented enough to fully understand its complex faculties)[4][10] or even involuntarily exercised under rare circumstances.[4]

The following is a list of all individuals who were known to perform ancient magic at some point in their lives:

NameNotes
Godric GryffindorWidely regarded as four of the greatest witches and wizards of their age, the fourfounders possessed great skill and knowledge in many different areas of magic, to the point where they were able to understand and wield powerful ancient magic, which they invoked in order to construct ahuge, rambling, quite scary-looking castle with a jumble of towers and battlements. A marvel of architectural majesty impervious to time that could not crumble and fall by natural means, an achievement the four could only have accomplished by invoking powerful ancient magic.[3]
Helga Hufflepuff
Rowena Ravenclaw
Salazar Slytherin
MerlinA legendarily great wizard in his own right, Merlin was famously accomplished in the magical arts and had, like the founders before him, mastered ancient magic as well, to the point where he understood the complex and dangerous magic that had gone into the creation of the fabledCursed Vaults. His knowledge on the subject was later retained by hisportrait, which warned future generations of denizens of the school how the vaults served as a punishment on modern wizards for abandoning the ways of ancient magic.[18]
Percival RackhamAlate-bloomer, his inherent ability to perceive and use ancient magic appeared when he was fifteen years old and entered Hogwarts in hisfifth year. He later became theProfessor ofDivination at Hogwarts and the founder of theKeepers.[3]
Charles RookwoodTheKeepers were a small collection of friends, colleagues and confidantes of Professor Rackham who, though they did not share his unique ability to see traces of ancient magic, were nevertheless highly accomplished witches and wizards themselves who were able to study, master and wield ancient magic as well. The results of their experiments brought about a number of hotspots of ancient magic all around theScottish Highlands, and ultimately resolved to help him safeguard the secrets of ancient magic from falling into the wrong hands. To this end, all four of them invoked powerful ancient magic to construct the both theAthenaeum, theMap Chamber, and the trials by whichthe right person could prove themselves worthy of joining their ranks and carry on the responsibility of protecting said secrets. The four of them also worked together in using ancient magic in conjunction with aWeather-Modifying Charm to save the little hamlet ofFeldcroft from a drought.[3]

San Bakar
Isidora MorganachLike Percival, she was a late-bloomer with the ability to see and use ancient magic, and started Hogwarts in her fifth year. She attempted to use her skill toextract pain from people as a form of well-meaning, but ultimately misguidedhealing magic, and was eventuallykilled bySan Bakar, one of the Keepers, to avoid damage to Hogwarts students.[3]
Flannery (possibly)Flannery supposedly used an "ancient spell" in1783 to track down the location of his murder victim,Hamish Steed, despite Steed being underMinistry protection.[14]
Unidentified 19th-century Hogwarts studentThis student's magical ability also developed late, similarly to Rackham and Morganach, and they started Hogwarts in their fifth year. They used their powers to protect thefinal repository fromRanrok.[3]
RanrokNoted by ProfessorEleazar Fig to be an exceptionally powerful goblin, Ranrok was able to craft a pair of gauntlets made ofgoblin-wrought silver in which he storedcorrupted ancient magic, and was able to subsequently invoke it both defensively and offensively in battle. After breaking thefinal repository and tapping theancient magic within, he used it to transfigure himself into adragon, and was briefly near invincible.
Belgruff the BludgeonerLike their leader, thecorrupted goblins found among the ranks ofRanrok's Loyalists also wore goblin armour capable of containing, and hence enabled them to wield, corrupted ancient magic to enhance their owngoblin magic and natural abilities or render their attacks more deadly.

Albus DumbledoreWidely regarded as the greatest wizard of modern times, Albus Dumbledore acquired both mastery and a profound understanding of ancient magic throughout his life, to the point where he was able to perform a spell capable of leveraging the unintentional ancient magic invoked by Lily Potter'ssacrifice to save her son toforge a bond between Harry Potter and his mother's blood relatives so the magical protection she gave him was extended, such that he would remain safe as long as he stayed with them in1981, which was itself a form of complex ancient magic.[10] His status as the headmaster of Hogwarts also gave him the ability to control the various enchantments and protections found around Hogwarts in addition to those he contributed with himself.
Lily J. PotterHer willing death at the hands ofLord Voldemort during theattack atGodric's Hollow in1981 bestowedsacrificial protection upon her son, Harry, shielding him from harm.[4]
Harry PotterLike his mother, he sacrificed himself during theBattle of Hogwarts, invoking the same form ofsacrificial protection on the students, staff, and defenders ofHogwarts.[17]
