About stdlib...

We believe in a future in which the web is a preferred environment for numerical computation. To help realize this future, we've built stdlib. stdlib is a standard library, with an emphasis on numerical and scientific computation, written in JavaScript (and C) for execution in browsers and in Node.js.

The library is fully decomposable, being architected in such a way that you can swap out and mix and match APIs and functionality to cater to your exact preferences and use cases.

When you use stdlib, you can be absolutely certain that you are using the most thorough, rigorous, well-written, studied, documented, tested, measured, and high-quality code out there.

To join us in bringing numerical computing to the web, get started by checking us out onGitHub, and please considerfinancially supporting stdlib. We greatly appreciate your continued support!

whileAsync

NPM versionBuild StatusCoverage Status

Invoke a function while a test condition is true.

Usage

To use in Observable,

whileAsync=require('https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/stdlib-js/utils-async-while@umd/browser.js')

To vendor stdlib functionality and avoid installing dependency trees for Node.js, you can use the UMD server build:

varwhileAsync=require('path/to/vendor/umd/utils-async-while/index.js')

To include the bundle in a webpage,

<scripttype="text/javascript"src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/stdlib-js/utils-async-while@umd/browser.js"></script>

If no recognized module system is present, access bundle contents via the global scope:

<scripttype="text/javascript">(function(){window.whileAsync;})();</script>

whileAsync( predicate, fcn, done[, thisArg ] )

Invokes afunction until apredicate function returnsfalse.

functionpredicate(i,clbk){clbk(null,i<5);}functionfcn(i,next){setTimeout(onTimeout,0);functiononTimeout(){console.log('beep: %d',i);next();}}functiondone(error){if(error){throwerror;}}whileAsync(predicate,fcn,done);/* =>    beep: 0    beep: 1    beep: 2    beep: 3    beep: 4*/

Thepredicate function is provided two arguments:

  • i: iteration number (starting from zero).
  • clbk: a callback indicating whether to invokefcn.

Theclbk function accepts two arguments:

  • error: error object.
  • bool: test result.

If the test result is truthy, the function invokesfcn; otherwise, the function invokes thedone callback.

The function to invoke is provided two arguments:

  • i: iteration number (starting from zero).
  • next: a callback which must be invoked before proceeding to the next iteration.

The first argument of bothclbk andnext is anerror argument. If either function is called with a truthyerror argument, the function suspends execution and immediately calls thedone callback for subsequenterror handling.

functionpredicate(i,clbk){clbk(null,i<5);}functionfcn(i,next){setTimeout(onTimeout,0);functiononTimeout(){next(newError('beep'));}}functiondone(error){console.error(error.message);// => beep}whileAsync(predicate,fcn,done);

Thedone callback is invoked with anerror argument and any arguments passed to the finalnext callback.

functionpredicate(i,clbk){clbk(null,i<5);}functionfcn(i,next){setTimeout(onTimeout,0);functiononTimeout(){next(null,i);}}functiondone(error,result){if(error){throwerror;}console.log(result);// => 4}whileAsync(predicate,fcn,done);

To set the function execution context for the invoked function, provide athisArg.

functionpredicate(i,clbk){clbk(null,i<5);}functionfcn(i,next){this.count+=1;setTimeout(onTimeout,0);functiononTimeout(){next();}}varcontext={'count':0};whileAsync(predicate,fcn,done,context);functiondone(error){if(error){throwerror;}console.log(context.count);// => 5}

Notes

  • Execution isnot guaranteed to be asynchronous. To guarantee asynchrony, wrap thedone callback in a function which either executes at the end of the current stack (e.g.,nextTick) or during a subsequent turn of the event loop (e.g.,setImmediate,setTimeout).

Examples

<!DOCTYPE html><htmllang="en"><body><scripttype="text/javascript"src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/stdlib-js/string-repeat@umd/browser.js"></script><scripttype="text/javascript"src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/stdlib-js/utils-async-while@umd/browser.js"></script><scripttype="text/javascript">(function(){functionpredicate(i,clbk){setTimeout(onTimeout,0);functiononTimeout(){clbk(null,i<5);}}functionfcn(i,next){setTimeout(onTimeout,0);functiononTimeout(){next(null,repeatString('beep',i+1));}}functiondone(error,result){if(error){throwerror;}console.log(result);}whileAsync(predicate,fcn,done);})();</script></body></html>
