… the plot

PR summary

This PR fixes a bug in polar plots (issue#30164), where removing ticks usingset_xticks([]) orset_yticks([]) would distort the aspect ratio.

Why is this change necessary?

Removing the ticks should not alter the scaling or appearance of the plot, but currently, it does in polar projections.

What problem does it solve?

It ensures that the radial and angular axes maintain their correct scaling even when ticks are hidden.

Implementation details

The fix modifiesPolarAxes._init_axis() to ensure that tick visibility no longer affects autoscaling or aspect locking.

Minimal example demonstrating the fix:

importnumpyasnpimportmatplotlib.pyplotaspltD=np.array([[2,.3], [.3,2.5]])lam,vec=np.linalg.eigh(D)theta=np.linspace(-np.pi,np.pi,1001)xy=np.stack((lam[0]*np.cos(theta),lam[1]*np.sin(theta)),axis=0)xy=vec.T @xyradii=np.sqrt(np.sum(xy**2,axis=0))thetas=np.arctan2(-xy[1],xy[0])plt.figure()ax1=plt.subplot(121,projection='polar')ax1.plot(thetas,radii)ax2=plt.subplot(122,projection='polar')ax2.plot(thetas,radii)ax2.set_xticks([])ax2.set_yticks([])plt.show()

Thanks for your willingness to contribute. However the fix is not appropriate. First, there’s already an existing pull request, which you can find linked in the original issue. Second, the solution here does not match state of the discussion in the issue.
