Surprising myself I actually managed to get another superhero movie into my schedule. It was very much helped by the fact that I was on my 2 year old daughter’s Max profile and she wanted to watch Scooby-Doo. I happened to notice that this movie was prominent on the list of various Scooby-Doo movies and series and I had heard it was a good movie and superhero related so I decided to put that on for us to watch together. She tuned out pretty early on as 2 year olds are want to do, but my wife and I continued to watch it through to the end and really enjoyed this movie. It has a lot of fun humor to it and tons of background Hanna-Barbera easter eggs that I quite enjoyed being someone that grew up watching a lot of Hanna-Barbera reruns on the early days of Cartoon Network. I was also somewhat surprised at the cast list full of Hollywood actors doing voices rather than notable voice actors, though Frank Welker is there to voice Scooby-Doo himself. It was a lot of fun and even though I thought this was going to be a superhero movie with Scooby-Doo in it, I was surprised at how much of it really was just like a superhero movie rather than a Scooby-Doo movie with a superhero in it.

Deadpool & Wolverine 2024

It’s been yet another long absence from this site as it’s been over a year since my review of the Flash, and in that time I’ve only made it out to theaters once to see Barbie a month later and now a year later I’ve made it back into the theater to watch a Marvel version of the Flash with Deadpool and Wolverine, only this one was done much better. I loved the first two Deadpool movies and the majority of Wolverine’s movie appearances so I had high hopes for this one. The rumor mill was spreading pretty rapidly though two cameo rumors that I had read about ended up being false, one character reportedly not returning showed up and another reported cameo was a no show. But I absolutely loved all the characters they chose to bring back as someone that was highly familiar with all of these movies and rumors and I will be talking about the majority of them so if you’d like to be kept spoiler free, here’s your warning.

The Flash 2023

It has been increasingly difficult to keep up with this site lately. I still have a love of superhero movies but somehow it’s been easier to stay on track with my podcasts looking at movies and shows in minute detail rather than making it out to the theater or watch a full length movie with a one year old running the household. I did even manage to watch the Super Mario Bros. Movie with the intention of writing a review for it, and I still might manage to plumb the depths of my memory to write one after this review but it’s been hard to just sit down and write. The renewal for the domain name just recently came up so the site will remain for another year at least and I have hopes that I haven’t given up on this site completely so be on the lookout for more reviews to come before the year is out, but I wouldn’t hold your breath for them. Anyway, as for the Flash; I watched in instead of Spider-Verse or Guardians 3 for a few different reasons. The main two were that I happened to sign up for theLambcast covering this movie and that it came out during my birthday weekend which I saw as a sign that I should watch it. It’s had some middling reviews, fan complaints, behind the scenes struggles, and a low box office. But honestly, this movie was right up my alley and I loved everything it threw at me. And there are plenty of little Easter eggs that I will be discussing, so if you haven’t seen it and are avoiding spoilers, here’s your warning.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania 2023

I’m doing what I can to keep this blog alive. It took an extra week but I did go out to the theaters to see the latest MCU movie and I have a few opinions. Even though this was the worst critically performing movie after the Eternals (which I still haven’t seen but plan to… eventually) it has a high audience score so I was fairly certain I would still enjoy it. I did, though there were a few issues that bothered me after the fact, but not while watching the movie. I think some of the character complaints were valid and the ending was a little weak but the visuals were fantastic and the humor has its own little niche that’s similar to Guardians of the Galaxy while still having its own tone unique to Ant-Man and Peyton Reed despite the rocky start. Like with many of the middle MCU films where it’s a superhero film crossed with another unique genre, this still gives us something new with a revolution story mixed with a sci-fi twist. I thought it was a fun continuation of the Ant-Man character and I hope we get some more down the line. And as with every new movie reviewed here, I will be diving into spoiler territory beyond this point so you have been warned.

Slumberland 2022

Once again, it’s been a bit since I’ve written anything here but my wife picked out this movie on Netflix for us to watch and it got me thinking about it. I immediately recognized it as a new adaptation of Little Nemo, I remember seeing the animated movie from the ’80’s and playing the NES game when I was younger. I always knew it was based on a previous work but I never really knew what specifically that was until I looked it up and saw that it was based on an old comic strip. It’s a full page, multi-panel strip that’s mostly one-off adventures that always ends with Nemo waking up on the last panel but there are ongoing story threads that were enough to convince me to add this movie to the site and I plan on revisiting the classic cartoon movie before too much longer after I manage to watch the new Black Panther movie. Anyway, the movie was fun enough even though it fell into what’s seemingly become a trope for these types of coming of age fantasy movies using fantasy issues to resolve real life issues. And, as this is a fairly recent film, here is your spoiler warning.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special 2022

While I haven’t gotten the chance to see the new Black Panther movie I did manage to see the latest Marvel Special Presentation after Werewolf by Night. I still think these are long and varied enough to be considered mini-movies rather than short films or a TV anthology series and this one was a lot of fun so I wanted to write about it. This is a much smaller story and very much Christmas focused but there is one big character reveal that was a deleted scene in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 that’s not all that surprising, but was surprisingly heartfelt. Music also plays a large part as it often does in the Guardians of the Galaxy films but this also includes a couple songs that the characters are singing themselves which brings it one step closer to a full musical. And while there’s not a whole lot to spoil in this holiday centered special there is that one reveal that will be discussed further in this review so here is your warning.

Black Adam 2022

This is the first new set of DCEU movies even though they’re still connected to the first set of DCEU movies with a couple of the characters introduced in cameos. While the term “Phase One” has been thrown around here and there, it would make more sense if this would be considered the phase two of the DCEU or go with some terminology that’s not obviously derivative of Marvel’s release strategy. The early reviews for this movie were slightly below mediocre but I still had high hopes that I would enjoy the film. I had very little knowledge about Black Adam as a character outside of a brief appearance “Superman/Shazam the Return of Black Adam” where he was very clearly a villain and as it was a short film he was a villain with no real motivation or back story outside of someone who is a match for Superman and Shazam. The same was true for the Justice Society and the characters used in this version of the Justice Society outside of a few vague appearances of Hawkman. But besides all of that, I did quite enjoy this introduction of Black Adam as this non-heroic character who makes the decision to become a reluctant hero. And as with all recent releases here, there will be spoilers ahead so be warned.

Once again it’s been a bit since I added something here but I managed to watch the first Marvel Special Presentation on Disney+ and while it’s only 55 minutes long, at this point I’m considering it a TV movie rather than a TV episode as there are likely more of these special presentations coming. As long as they’re longer than 40 minutes, I will likely continue to include them here as long as my subscription to Disney+ holds. This is the directorial debut of Michael Giacchino and he really comes out swinging with a visually interesting look and the MCU introductions of several lesser known characters. The mostly black and white with splashes of color really give this “special presentation” a different feel along with an excuse to add some additional gore that wouldn’t have been allowed in full color. Overall, I really enjoyed it though since this is a new release here’s my obligatory warning for spoilers ahead.

Thor: Love and Thunder 2022

It’s time for yet another new Marvel movie and while I did manage to get out to see this movie opening weekend, I haven’t had a chance to sit down and write about it until now. I did however speak my thoughts on arecent Lambcast so you can hear more of my opinion along with 4 other Lamb members. I went into this movie hearing a fair mix of things, several people compared it negatively against Ragnarok so I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going to get into. For the most part, I loved this film in a similar manner as Ragnarok and while I do see the complaints, they didn’t detract from the film too much for me. Not only that, but I felt like this had a much better emotional throughline for several of the characters. And since this is a new release, I’m always compelled to issue a spoiler warning and there are several things to spoil that have been left out of the trailers so be warned.

It hasn’t been easy trying to resume a normal schedule here. With a ten month old daughter at home and two podcasts that I’m actually keeping on schedule (for the most part) it’s been a lot harder to find time to watch a 3 hour movie. But several months after it coming to HBO Max I managed to watch it over the course of two evenings. I had already heard a lot of mixed-but-mostly-positive things about this film so I was ready to enjoy it. And for the most part, it was quite enjoyable. I’m not fully on board with the emo teenager vibe to Bruce Wayne when he has to be in his late twenties minimum if not mid thirties like Robert Pattinson who is playing him. The rest of the cast is fantastic, the decision to make this more like a detective story rather than an origin or straight up action film is a good one. There’s really a lot to love in this film and while there are plenty of nits to pick, they don’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the film.
