FromProto-Italic*wāros, probably fromProto-Indo-European*h₁weh₂-ro-s, from*h₁weh₂-(separate), with sense development "separated" > "opened" > "with the legs opened" > "bent-in legs". May be cognate withvarius(variegated in color).[1]
