FromMiddle Dutchvāren(to go, travel), fromOld Dutchfaran, fromProto-West Germanic*faran, fromProto-Germanic*faraną. The restriction to “travel by water” comes (expectably) from the western dialects; the more general sense survives in the east, but is no longer part of standard Dutch.
