Etymology

[edit]

FromOld Frenchvois, ultimately fromLatinvadō. The origin of-ais, while the final-s is not etymologically spurious in Old French, is unclear. Likely taken fromLatintranseō <*trasjo to form the expected*vausjō (see more atReichenau Glossary). The element*vau- comes from*vaō (infinitive*vare), elided form ofvadō.
