FromMiddle Englishtwenty-thre,twenti-thre,twenti-thrie,twenty-thrie, ultimately derived fromOld Englishþrēo and twēntiġ(twenty-three, literallythree andtwenty); see alsothree-and-twenty. The reason for the numericalswap across the spellings for all English numbers is unknown, but it may have been influenced by theOld French system, i.e. seevint trois(literallytwentythree). Bysurface analysis, twenty(thecardinal number20, occurring afternineteen and beforetwenty-one) +‎three(the cardinal number3, occurring aftertwo and beforefour).
