Etymology

[edit]

FromProto-Italic*sonts (see*som), fromProto-Indo-European*h₁s-ónt-s, the present participle of*h₁es- (whence alsosum). Due tovowel reduction, it appears as-sēns in compounded forms ofsum. Thus "he who is it", "the real person", "the guilty one". CompareEnglishsooth for an exact cognate, andsin for the same semantic development.
