Sala
Sala

There are different opinions on the origin of this word. Some derive it fromProto-Baltic*sel-,*sal-, fromProto-Indo-European*sel-, a variant of*ser-(to flow); in this case, the original meaning would have been “stream, river,” from which “body of water”(cf.Lithuaniansálti(to flow slowly),Ancient Greekἕλος(hélos, swamp) (<*selos),Sanskritसरः(sáraḥ,lake, pond), perhaps alsoLatininsula <*in-sal-, and several river names: Salaca, Salica > Selke in Germany, Salate), then “something inside (a body of water),” “island.” Others derivesala from*ap(i)sala, from a verb meaning “to flow” (cf.Russianо́стров(óstrov, island), fromProto-Slavic*o-strovь, so that the original meaning would be “that which is surrounded by flowing (water)”). Still others considersala to come fromProto-Indo-European*swel-(to swell), with as original meaning “(river) silt, deposits, sediments.” Cognates includeLithuaniansalà; comparable Baltic-Finnic terms (Livoniansala(island),Estoniansalu(swamp island),Finnishsalo(forest island; forest)) are considered as borrowings from Baltic.[1]
