Egyptian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

r(ꜣ)w(plural ofr(ꜣ)(mouth, utterance)) +‎nw(masculine plural ofnj(of)) +‎prt(infinitive ofprj(to come forth)) +‎m(in, during, from) +‎hrw(day). The literal meaning is thus ‘Utterances of Coming Forth in the Day’. This is traditionally interpreted to mean ‘coming forth by/into day’, but note that every other use ofm withprj takes the meaning of ‘from, out of’ rather than ‘in’, suggesting the intended meaning may be ‘coming forthfrom the day’.
