Inherited fromMiddle Frenchrincer(to rinse), fromOld Frenchrincer,raïncier(to rinse, cleanse). Of contested origin. Either fromOld Norsehreinsa(to rinse, clean out), fromProto-Germanic*hrainisōną(to clean, purify), or from a dissimilation of Old Frenchrecincer, fromLatinrecentāre(to make fresh), fromrecens. Cognate withEnglishrinse, which see.
