Etymology

FromProto-Baltic*platús, from*pl̥th₂us <*pleth₂-(flat). In Latvian, formeru-stem adjectives were assimilated into other classes;*platus gave rise to both ano-stem and ayo-stem variant which later on became independent words, plats andplašs, with different semantic nuances (compare alsodobs anddobjš, orass andašs); this separation began in the 18th century but became complete only in the 1870s. Cognates includeLithuanianplatùs,Old Prussianplat- (from a placename,Platmedyen, wheremedian = “forest”),Sanskritपृथु(pṛthu, broad, wide, great, powerful),Ancient Greekπλατύς(platús,broad, wide, flat, smooth).[1]
