From 16th-centuryparsnepe, fromMiddle Englishpassenep, a modification ofOld Frenchpasnaie by influence ofMiddle Englishnepe(turnip), fromLatinpastināca(parsnip, carrot), frompastinum(two-pronged fork) as inpastināre(to dig up the ground).[1]
