Inherited fromProto-Polynesian*poo, from Proto-Central Pacific*boŋi, fromProto-Oceanic*boŋi (doublet ofponi), fromProto-Malayo-Polynesian*bəʀŋi (compare withJavanesewengi), fromProto-Austronesian*bəʀŋi.

Sense of time cycle based on counting of moon phases emerging not long after sunrise to differentiate between each solar cycle of similar tropical daytime lengths,[1] but has been mostly displaced with byDavid Malo's time. Similar patterns found inMaori andTahitian.[2]
