FromOld Italianonne~onni (with /ˈɔ-/ per the Latin etymon), fromLatinomnis, fromProto-Italic*opnis, ultimately fromProto-Indo-European*h₃ep-(“to work, toil”).
The development of palatalized /-ɲ-/ and closed /ˈo-/, already attested in the thirteenth century (ógne, laterógni), are due to the word being frequently unstressed. Variants with /ˈɔ-/ still survive in much of Tuscany and Central Italy.[1]
