Blust 2010- tentatively posits this is fromProto-Malayo-Polynesian*ŋuyaq, and is cognate withMalaykunyah, but this comparison is phonologically problematic, and the most likely origin of the word being aback-formation from hypothetical *manguyà (mang- +*kuyà), *kuyà being from the tentative reconstruction *kuyaq.[1]
