FromProto-Polynesian*laŋo “houseflies, bees, wasps” bymetathesis (compare withMaoringaro andrango,Tonganlango,Samoanlago) fromProto-Malayo-Polynesian*laŋaw (compare withMalaylangau “horsefly”,Tagaloglangaw “fly”).[1][2]

Sense of bee is extension, compare also with connection betweenMaoringaro andngaro huruhuru for similar semantic overlap.
