Thenoun is borrowed fromLate Latinlumbāgō(backache of the lumbar region), from Late Latinlumbus(lumbar),Latinlumbus(loin)[1] (ultimately fromProto-Indo-European*lendʰ-(loins)) +-āgō(suffix forming nouns describing objects, animals, and plants).

Theverb is derived from the noun.[2]
