Etymology

[edit]
Lava

FromItalian, fromNeapolitan andSicilianlava(lava”, but also “downpour overflowing the streets). Likely in the sense of “landslide, torrent” fromLatinlabes(fall), comparelabina(avalanche, landslide). A supposed relation withlavare(to wash) is now widely discredited. Neither is there probably any relation withArabicلابة(lāba,black volcanic rock).(Canthis(+) etymology besourced?)

Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

lava (countable anduncountable,plurallavas)

  1. The moltenrock ejected by avolcano from itscrater orfissured sides;magma that has breached the surface of the earth.
    • 1991,Martha Holmes,Sea Trek, BBC Books, page44:
Marine iguanas line the shores of the islands, and are usually seen sprawled overlava rocks near the sea.
  2. (informal, proscribed)Magma.
  3. A shade of red, named after the volcanic lava.
    lava:

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Geologists make a distinction betweenmagma (molten rock underground) and lava (molten rock on the surface).
