FromProto-Polynesian*fune – compare withTahitianhune,Samoanfune andTonganfune.[1][2] Sense of pappus transferred from "breadfruit core" > "fluffy pappus [and its receptacle]" due to absence of breadfruit in New Zealand's temperate climate.
