FromProto-Finnic*huima. Related toEstonianuim,Ingrianhuima,Karelianhuima andVotichuimõ. The Finnic word is probably originally a borrowing from eitherOld Norsesvíma(“to faint, to swoon”) orOld Norsehvima(“to be confused”);[1] for sense, comparehuimata. Alternatively, possibly akin tohuikea (comparetuikea ~tuima, julkea ~julma), but in any case influenced by it in terms of meaning.
