Etymology 1

[edit]

Shortened fromhobby-horse, fromMiddle Englishhoby, hobyn, hobin(small horse, pony), fromOld Frenchhobi,*haubi, haubby, hobin("a nag, hobby"; > Modern Frenchaubin, Italianubino), ofGermanic origin: fromOld Frenchhober, ober(to stir, move), fromOld Dutchhobben(to toss, move up and down); or fromNorth Germanic origin related toDanishhoppe(a mare),Old Swedishhoppa(a young mare),North Frisianhoppe(horse); both ultimately fromProto-Germanic*huppōną(to hop), fromProto-Indo-European*kewb-(to bend; a bend, joint). More athop, hobble.

The meaning ofhobby-horse shifted from "small horse, pony" to "child's toy riding horse" to "favorite pastime or avocation" with the connecting notion being "activity that doesn't go anywhere". Possibly originally from aproper name for a horse, a diminutive ofRobert orRobin (comparedobbin).
