English

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

FromMiddle Englishfonne, fon(foolish, simple, silly) orfonnen(make a fool of), fromMiddle Englishfonne(a fool, dupe), probably ofNorth Germanic origin, related toSwedishfånig(foolish),Swedishfåne(a fool), fromOld Norsefáni(vain person, swaggerer), but of unknown ultimate origin. Perhaps related to or influenced byfjäll(rock, cliff, mountain).[1] Compare alsoEnglishfumble,Norwegian Nynorskfomme(clumsy fool).

Compare alsoNorwegianfomme,fume(a fool). More atfon,fond.

As a noun, fun is recorded from 1700, with a meaning “a cheat, trick, hoax”, from a verbfun meaning “to cheat, trick” (1680s). The meaning “diversion, amusement” dates to the 1720s. The older meaning is preserved in the phrasetomake fun of (1737) and in usage of the adjectivefunny. The use offun as adjective is newest and is due to reanalysis of the noun; this was incipient in the mid-19th century.

Alternative etymology connectedMiddle Englishfonne withOld Frisianfonna, fone, fomne, variant forms offāmne,fēmne(young woman, virgin), fromProto-West Germanic*faimnijā, fromProto-Germanic*faimnijǭ(maiden), fromProto-Indo-European*peymen-(girl),*poymen-(breast milk). If so, then cognate withOld Englishfǣmne(maid, virgin, damsel, bride),West Frisianfamke(girl),Saterland Frisianfone, fon(woman, maid, servant," also "weakling, simpleton).
