AfterGermanCytosin, equivalent toAncient Greekκύτος(kútos) +-ine. Cytosine was discovered and named by the German biochemistsAlbrecht Kossel andAlbert Neumann in 1894 when it was hydrolyzed from calf thymus tissues.
