(music theory) A sequence ofbass notes at intervals of oneperfect fifth lower than the previous note. In twelve-toneequal temperament the sequence repeats every twelve tones, forming a cycle.
The composition modulates upwards through thecycle of fifths, eventually returning to the original key.
