Etymology

[edit]

FromMiddle Englishcatacombe, fromOld Englishcatacumbe, catacumbas pl, fromLate Latincatacumbae pl, name of the underground cemetery of St. Sebastian in Rome, of unclear origin. Perhaps adissimilation (influenced by*cumbō(to lie, recline)) ofLate Latincatatumbās(literallyamong the tombs) (fromAncient Greekκατά(katá,under) andτύμβος(túmbos,tomb)).[1][2] Some sources suggest Ancient Greekκύμβη(kúmbē,drinking vessel) as an alternative etymon, but the semantic link is unclear.[3]
