FromMiddle Englishcatacombe, fromOld Englishcatacumbe, catacumbas pl, fromLate Latincatacumbae pl, name of the underground cemetery of St. Sebastian in Rome, of unclear origin. Perhaps adissimilation (influenced by*cumbō(“to lie, recline”)) ofLate Latincatatumbās(literally“among the tombs”) (fromAncient Greekκατά(katá,“under”) andτύμβος(túmbos,“tomb”)).[1][2] Some sources suggest Ancient Greekκύμβη(kúmbē,“drinking vessel”) as an alternative etymon, but the semantic link is unclear.[3]
