Borrowed fromGermanbekannt(known, acquainted), fromMiddle High Germanbekant, past participle ofbekennen(to know; to make known). The verb also developed the sense “to confess” in German, which was separately loaned into Swedish asbekänna. Here the Swedish past participle isbekänd(confessed).
