Usage notes

[edit]
  • (from a place) The normal word for “from” (when meaning something other than “out of, from the inside of”) isvon. For example:ein Geschenk von meinen Eltern(a present from my parents). However, aus is used with words for rooms, dwellings, settlements, and territories, such asHaus(house),Garten(garden),Dorf(village),Land(country), etc., and also with geographical names that refer to such places. An exception to this rule is thatvon is used when both an origin and a destination are given. Individual words may also behave irregularly; so one saysvon einem Bauernhof(from a farm). Comparevon for more.
