Inherited fromVulgar Latin*eccum tantum, fromLatineccum +tantum. (The initial syllable of*eccum- compounds regularly turns to /a-/ in Romanian.) Closely parallel toItaliancotanto andOld Catalanaitant. Compare alsoOld Frenchitant,Old Spanishatanto (as well asFrenchtant,Italiantanto,Spanishtanto).
