Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. At least two proposals exist:

  1. fromSpanishasno orLatinasinus, although phonetically improbable;
  2. fromhartz(bear) +‎-to(diminutive suffix), phonetically impeccable, but semantically strange.

If the second is correct, then may be related toAquitanian*asto, found in*Asto-ilunno.[1][2]
