Latin

anser (a goose)

Etymology

[edit]

From presumedProto-Italic*hāns (stem*han-s-, where the strong stem was most likely contaminated by the weak stem, resulting in*hānsez- > Latinānser-), fromProto-Indo-European*ǵʰh₂éns (or similar; the reconstruction is debated). The form was influenced by unrelatedanas(duck), as the presumed original initial aspiration is wholly unattested in the Latin word. Cognates includeSanskritहंस(haṃsa),Ancient Greekχήν(khḗn),Russianгусь(gusʹ),Old Irishgéiss,Old Englishgōs (Englishgoose), andAlbaniangatë(heron).
