First attested in 1531. FromFrenchaccélération or more likely directly fromLatinaccelerātiō(a hastening, acceleration).[1] Equivalent toaccelerate +‎-ion.

  1. (uncountable) The act of accelerating, or the state of being accelerated; increase of motion or action; as opposed toretardation ordeceleration.
    A falling body moves toward the earth with anacceleration of velocity.
